Islands of Tragedy

On the Great Barrier Reef there are hundreds of small islands and sand cays that seem harsh, barren, and inhospitable to life.  But, on each of these a life and death struggle goes on daily.

Raine Island is such a tragedy, a graveyard of turtles.  Ben and the scientist count 680 turtles that died here in the nesting season and save 13 still alive.   But they also witness over 13,000 turtles nesting in one night, and an estimated 200 million hatchlings returning to the sea.  These babies are preyed on by the crabs, birds, fish and sharks.

Here also, Ben survives a frightening shark encounter, when six whaler shark attack him all together.
