March of the Crabs

On Christmas Island, an incredible odyssey unfolds as the wet season begins.  80 million red crabs march down the mountain to the sea to mate and spawn.

Ben Cropp and his two sons follow this march of the crabs.  They cross roads where 2 million die, enter homes like gremlins, and inexorably march on til they reach the sea.

When the females spawn on a set night, the cliffs are stained red with millions of crabs laden with eggs.

Dean with camera finds himself in their path, and is soon knee-deep in a swarming mass of crabs clambering over each other to reach the water, where they raise nippers and shake to disperse the eggs.  It’s an awe inspiring sight.
